A symbol of the enduring spirit of the local community, the Windmill of Klirou was constructed in the early twentieth century to ingeniously address the community’s water needs.

Function – main architectural features: The windmill strategically harnessed wind power above a pit, inducing efficient water transportation through continuous rotation. This motion activated a lever mechanism connected to a piston within a submerged conduit, facilitating the water’s elevation to the surface and its exit through a designated outlet, cascading into a reservoir.

The Windmill of Klirou became a vital resource for local residents, supporting daily domestic use and providing essential hydration to livestock. Unfortunately, during the 1960s, the windmill met its demise and was subsequently sold. In a noteworthy community-driven revival, a new windmill was commissioned and installed on the same site in 2005. Simultaneously, the surroundings underwent transformative changes, leading to the designation of the area as “Windmill Square” in commemoration of the revitalization initiative by the Community Council.

Positioned strategically above a pit, the windmill’s main architectural feature was its ability to harness the force of blowing air. The operational mechanism involved blades set in perpetual rotation, which, in turn, drove a lever mechanism connected to a piston within a submerged conduit leading to the pit’s floor. This innovative design facilitated the elevation of water, serving as a crucial resource for the community. The windmill’s form, with its intricate interplay of motion and functionality, was not only a testament to engineering ingenuity but also a vital part of the local landscape.

Form: The Windmill of Klirou is an American-style windmill, an innovative solution used mostly for water pumping invented in 1854 by American engineer and businessman Daniel Halladay. The first windmills of this type were made of wood, but soon this material was replaced by steel. The American windmill is composed by a tall reinforced tower, a slatted fan wheel and rudder-like tail.
